Product Description

Volkl DNX 10 Mid (93)
The new DNX 10 Mid weighs in at 12 oz strung, and with a strung swing weight of 320, it is very clear who Volkl has in mind for this new big banger racquet. The DNX 10 is the most control orientated tournament level racquet found in the Völkl Tennis collection. The DNX 10 is focused on providing exceptional feel due to a flexible construction, combined with a thin beam that maximizes the control of each shot. By incorporating the revolutionary new material DNX, this tournament player's racquet provides the performance needed to succeed in today's hard-hitting game. DNX strengthens the racquet in three strategic areas: 3 & 9 o'clock, and above the grip. This allows the rest of the frame to remain very flexible to provide the feel demanded by serious players. This unique blend of stronger and flexible sections in the same racquet provides a unique feel and performance.

Ideally suited for players with aggressive, long strokes.
Recommended for the 5.0-7.0 NTRP level players.

Dynamic PCP: Power Control Pattern:
The dense string pattern in the racquet's sweetspot ensures that power is controllable. Balls hit outside the sweetspot maintain optimal power and comfort thanks to the more open string bed.

Sensor Tour Handle System:
Includes a two part racquet shaft and TechnoGel surrounded by EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate). This is visible technology you can actually see through the butt cap of the racquet. Designed to dampen vibration without sacrificing touch.

DNX Technology:
A revolutionary material innovation the cornerstone for a new ground-breaking racquet series. Carefully placed between the carbon fibers in strategically important areas of each tennis racquet, the DNX fibers add a totally new dimension in the production of tennis racquets. The DNX allows the Volkl racquet to be stronger but remain extremely comfortable, controllable without giving up any power! Also with DNX, racquets with more flexible features can remain just as soft but deliver a completely new level of stability and unprecedented power.

Let’s get right to the point: Volkl is back and the DNX 10 is a sure winner. For players who abandoned the Volkl line because of disappointing entrants the last year or two, you will want to give the DNX 10 and its sister racquets (DNX 3, DNX V1, DNX 8) a fresh look - Volkl has definitely made some noticeable improvements. I have been a Volkl guy in the past, playing first with the Volkl Tour 10 Mid Plus and then the Volkl Tour 10 V-Engine Mid Plus, so I have some background with this brand. When I initially got hold of the DNX 10, the first thing that struck me were its good, clean looks; I could tell this racquet meant business. When I picked it up for the first time I had a strong feeling that Volkl had come out with a solid player racquet. And when I first started hitting with it, I knew for sure this would be one of the best racquets of its class.

Before we get into the play test results, let me orient you with Volkl's racquet categorization system so you can better understand where the DNX 10 fits into the big picture. The Volkl rating scale goes from 1 to 10, with racquets rated at 1 being for beginner players (E.g., the Catapult 1) and those rated at 10 being for advanced players (e.g. the DNX 10).

DNX is a unique material structure featuring high-strength micro-tube construction that is 25 times stronger than regular carbon fibers. It is an entirely new class of material whose properties represent the "fourth dimension" of carbon, giving it strength characteristics that have never been reached before. DNX is a true evolution in material development. In early 2006 Volkl introduced a series of four racquets using this breakthrough technology: DNX 3, DNX V1 (Mid Plus and Oversize), DNX 8 and DNX 10.

THIS RACQUET IS SUITABLE FOR...

Both the Mid (93 sq. in.) and MidPlus Versions (98 sq. in.) are ideally suited for players with aggressive, long strokes. Recommended for the 5.0-7.0 NTRP level players.

FIRST IMPRESSION

Getting back to my on-court experiences with the DNX 10, the first thing I noticed was the difference in sound between this racquet and the old Tour 10 V-Engine when I hit the ball. Gone was the loud pinging sound that the Tour 10 V-Engine made, replaced by a solid "pop" in the DNX 10. Also, the DNX 10 is a more stable racquet, giving me more support on shots that many other racquets I’ve played with do not.

STRING / TENSION

I tested the DNX 10 over a 3-week period in which I played about 25 total hours with the racquet. I strung it up at 55 lbs (middle of the manufacturer’s recommended range) with Volkl Powerfiber 16g string.

MY PLAYING STYLE

I am an all court player who likes to play from the baseline but have no problems doing a little serving and volleying from time to time. I use a Western forehand grip, two-handed backhand and I like to hit with a lot of topspin.

GROUND STROKES

On groundstrokes, the DNX 10 was very control oriented yet had some nice power when I had time to step into the ball. I noticed that as long as I was in and around the sweet spot, this racquet felt great on both the forehand and backhand sides. The only drawback I noticed was on mis-hits: this racquet did not give me a lot of support. As a matter of fact, the ball felt like it died almost immediately upon leaving the strings. I guess you can expect that from this type of racquet (i.e., a player racquet geared for precision and control), but I expected a little more forgiveness on balls hit just outside the sweet spot.

VOLLEYS

On volleys, I found the DNX 10 to be very stable and solid. If you like a well-balanced and relatively light racquet, this one is great for volleying. Once again, shots that did not hit the sweet spot gave me very little support and most of those volleys went right into the net.

SERVES

On serves, the DNX 10 performed really well. It was once again very supportive and I found I could generate quite a bit of speed on my serve with this racquet. Also, I was able to kick the ball with plenty of force into the ad corner. I found very little to complain about when serving with this racquet.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the DNX technology has vastly improved the quality of not only this racquet but the entire Volkl DNX line. I found the DNX 10 to be much better in quality and stability than many of its recent predecessors. The DNX 10 is a very well built racquet, has a solid feel and sharp looks. It is an excellent racquet for an improving intermediate to advanced player who is looking for a headlight, control-oriented stick that gives lots of support and plays consistently well from baseline to net. The only knock on this racquet is that it is not very forgiving if you hit the ball outside the sweet spot, but otherwise it rewards you quite well when you do.
