Product Description

Yonex RDS 001 (90)
Racquet of choice for Lleyton Hewitt! The RDS 001 Mid is another solid player's racquet from Yonex. With a crisp response, this racquet has a little extra pop and a firmer feel than the RDX 500. The mobility is excellent for a player's racquet. Also, the Isometric technology gives players more power, control and a huge sweet spot without increasing frame dimensions. The RDS001 Mid (90) offers has a smaller sweetspot and is a little more control oriented than the RDS001 MP (98).

Ideally suited for players with aggressive, long strokes. Recommended for the 5.0-7.0 NTRP level players.

Isometric Technology: With more strings of equal length and a larger effective hitting area in the stringbed, the Isometric Square Head Shape provides consistently accurate shots, giving more power, control and more effective off-center hits.

Flew Control Shaft by Elastic Ti Technology: Elastic Ti delivers the performance players have long wanted in a frame - high elasticity and high strength together. Moulded into the shaft, the Elastic Ti shaft overcomes the limitations of conventional frame matericals. With its powerful rebound effect, a split second after impact and deflection, the Elastic Ti frame snaps back to its original shape with high accuracy and with the full energy of the swing.

Shockless Grommet Technology: The soft grommets are located at the 4 corners of the frame. These grommets are designed to reduce the shock from any off-center hits, widening the sweet spot even further.

Muscle Power Technology: Extra frame durability and reduced string vibration for a solid feel on impact are attained by "rounding-off the corners" with Muscle Power Technology. You will get up to 10% more spin and up to 7% more ball speed.

The Yonex RDS 001 comes in two sizes. The mid features a 90 inch head and was until recently the weapon of choice for Lleyton Hewitt. The mid-plus head is 98 inches and this size is used by many touring ATP and WTA pros, David Nalbandian being the best known devotee of this model. Yonex touts their Elastic Ti technology as being the key to the playability of this racquet, a technology which apparently allows to the head to return to its original position and shape quickly after contact. But whatever the reason this is an amazing racquet for advanced players. The mid weighs 12.1 ounces strung and is the standard length. The smaller head size has the racquet feeling like a lighter version of the Wilson Pro Staff 85 classic, with more flexibility and margin for error. This is another racquet where the player has to be able to provide their own power. The mid-plus weighs 11.7 ounces strung and is also 27 inches in length. The larger head size makes this racquet much more of a useful tool for a baseline player, particularly one who is wanting to hit the ball with a lot of topspin and pace.

THIS RACQUET IS SUITABLE FOR...

Ideally suited for players with aggressive, long strokes. Recommended for the 5.0-7.0 NTRP level players.

FIRST IMPRESSION

This may be a personal thing, but I loved this frame in spite of the loud and bad cosmetics. A number of my practice partners and students made the same comment while I was hitting with this frame. They just could not believe how loud the thing was. One friend told me that he demoed the frame and seriously considered switching to it, but in the end he could just not see himself playing with a yellow and black frame. Cosmetics aside this is a great racquet. The ball has a crisp firm feel coming of the strings and there is little vibration to speak of. In addition to being a great frame for advanced players (4.5-5.0 on up), any player with elbow and or wrist issues would be advised to demo this racquet. The mid-plus is just a little less crisp than the mid in terms of the feel of the ball with regard to the string bed, but for sure even the larger size head does not have the mushy feel that many frames in the 98-110 inch range have.

STRING / TENSION

I played with the mid for well over 50 hours (about 50-50 between playing, practicing and teaching), strung both with Yonex Syn gut (not a good idea) and Luxilllon ALU Power (the perfect match of racquet and string). I played with the mid-plus for over 10 hours, strung with Yonex Syn gut. All of the racquets were strung midrange, which is 60 pounds for these frames.

MY PLAYING STYLE

I play an attacking style; mainly serving and volleying, when receiving trying to position myself with my forehand for forays to the net.

GROUND STROKES

I loved hitting ground strokes with both frames. The mid-plus was easier to hit topspin with, no doubt due to the larger head size, bigger sweet spot and the ball staying on the strings fractionally longer. It was much easier for me to hit slice backhands with the mid, probably for the reverse of the reasons in the previous comment. Both frames require a player to provide much if not all of the power, but the mid-plus has slightly more pop, and more advanced players will be attuned to this difference, and pick it up right away.

VOLLEYS

The mid is a much better choice for a net player. It has a crisp feel at the net, and the racquet head size makes it easy to move at the net. I found it comfortable both in terms of pounding volleys deep into the court and hitting slice and feel and angle volleys. The slight mushiness of the mid plus, in relation to the mid, is much more of an issue at net in my view. The mid-plus feels much softer at the net than it did at the baseline. I had considerable difficulty relatively, trying to control the both the pace and the spin of the ball when volleying with the larger head.

SERVES

I would have switched to this frame, were it not for the serve. I could not hit my serve as hard with either the mid or mid-plus. It was comfortable enough to spin the serve in with either frame, although the mid-plus was much more user friendly even in this regard. But I could not find my flat or hard slice delivery consistently with either the mid or the mid plus. I don’t know if it is the slightly rectangular head size, or if it was just a question of personal feel. But I would hit a lot of serves before choosing this frame, even if everything else seemed online. For sure it could have been me.

CONCLUSION

The Yonex RD 001 in both sizes is an excellent choice for the player in the 4.5-5.0 on up range. The mid is probably suited to players with longer swings, all-court players(due to the ease of maneuvering the smaller head) and players who generate all of their own power. The mid plus is for sure a better choice for baseline players, and players who counter punch from the baseline andor slightly inside. I was very close to choosing the mid as my next racquet, the serve issue just was a little too much to overcome. I think that baseline players who hit topspin serves and than run around and bang the forehand would love either of these frames. Just put on your dark sunglasses and ignore the paint job. Your opponents won’t be commenting much about cosmetics as you move them around and than rip balls by them.
