Grass Court Glory: Alcaraz, Bublik, and Vondrousova Dazzle with Style and Substance
June 23rd, 2025 by Carlota

This past weekend, three uniquely gifted players—Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Bublik, and Marketa Vondrousova—each lifted a trophy on grass, showcasing not just their talent but the distinct playing styles that set them apart.
At Queen’s Club, Carlos Alcaraz defended his title with a thrilling 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-2 win over Jiri Lehecka. The Spaniard’s strong serve was a key weapon—he fired 18 aces and won 87% of first-serve points. But it was his ability to elevate under pressure, mixing aggressive returns with feather-light drop shots, that allowed him to dominate the final set and extend his grass-court win streak to 18 matches.
In Halle, Alexander Bublik delivered a masterclass in unpredictability and finesse, defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6(4) to win his second title at the event. Known for his flair, Bublik’s bold shot-making and deft touch at the net kept Medvedev off balance. He strung together a 12-point run in the first set and clawed back from 1–4 in the tiebreak with a mix of drop shots, wide serves, and fearless improvisation.
Meanwhile, in Berlin, Marketa Vondrousova capped a stunning comeback by winning her first title since Wimbledon 2023. The Czech lefty used her crafty, left-handed variety—slices, lobs, and disguised drop shots—to dismantle top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the semis and outlast Wang Xinyu in a three-set final. Her ability to disrupt rhythm and redirect pace proved decisive, especially in the final set where she saved both break points she faced.
Looking Ahead
This week, the grass-court swing rolls on with the Lexus Eastbourne Open in the U.K, the Mallorca Championships in Spain, and the Bad Homburg Open in Germany—the final tune-ups before Wimbledon begins July 7. If this past weekend is any indication, the lawns at Wimbledon are about to get very interesting. Who do you think is looking stronger?
