Women's Tennis Racquets
Technology and Innovation in Today's Women's Tennis Racquets
Women have been playing tennis for over 150 years. During that time, women's tennis racquets have made great strides in technology, functionality, and style—all designed to place women at the forefront of the tennis industry.
How to Choose the Best Tennis Racquet for Women
The proper fitting tennis racquet is key to optimum tennis performance. Here is how to choose the best tennis racquet for women based on racquet weight, racquet head size and shape, and racquet length.
Tennis Racquet Weight
Select a tennis racquet that feels light enough to control, yet heavy enough to still be able to forcefully propel the ball. If you're a beginning player, start with a racquet that's a bit heavier — more than 11 ounce. A heavier racquet will give you more power without much loss of control.
If you're an intermediate to advanced player, it's recommended to select a lighter racquet. This will strengthen your racquet control and maneuverability, while strengthening your power shots.
Tennis Racquet Head Size and Head Shape
Too large of a tennis head can feel clumsy in a woman’s hand, so the best racquet head size will generally be around 85-95 square inches. This is more than enough space to powerfully drive the ball, while still maintaining proper control and form.
The shape of the racquet head also has an effect on the racquet's power. Oval shaped heads place the sweet spot in the lower half of the head, which provides more resiliency and control of the ball, whereas teardrop shaped heads provide a bigger sweet spot, and thus more power.
Tennis Racquet Length
The best length for a woman's racquet depends largely on height, although skill level makes a difference, too. The standard 27-inch racquet provides a good balance between power and control.
A longer racquet (28-29 inches) provides more reach on ground strokes, added leverage on serves, and slightly more power than a standard length racquet. Before making a switch to a longer tennis racquet, be sure to demo the racquet in your hand, and do practice strokes and serves to determine if the length is too long.
